This mushroom naturally spawns itself in elephant dung in India, which is exactly where it was originally found. It grows some HUGE caps with really long stems in dung or compost. Original specimens were aquired from "Mushroom John" (entheomycologist John Allen). Often growing caps with diameters of 6" and up. Definitely one of the largest growing cubensis strains that anyone has seen, larger even than B+ depending on depth of compost. The deeper, the larger. It is however not very stable on rice cakes, we originally thought that growing Orissa on rice cakes was not possible, since it has a insatiable hunger for dung and compost. Some attempts were made in Amsterdam, but they failed. Producing mushrooms that developed too rapidly too young, as if their growing cycle and internal clock were messed up. They began to open their caps when they were way too young, not even producing a veil yet. Even at the tiny size of only 1/4" - 1". We have found that the first flush is always the hardest, and in order to be able to produce any real mushrooms in the first flush, you have to spot all of the ones that are not going to grow properly RIGHT AWAY, to allow resources for the few that will develop properly. Out of a flush of over 50+ mushrooms in a pint sized rice cake, most of them were picked within the first few days, allowing for the growth of only about 10 possible full maturerees. From those 10, a few more were picked soon after and it left only 6 or 7 properly developed. ������ These stem lines are almost exclusive to the Orisa India, not smooth at all, as if it had lots of tendons pulling on the inside. This show radically at about this stage of the mushroom, and become more subtle as it matures.
