Psilocybe subaeruginosa is native mainly to New Zealand and Australia. Its habitat and substrates are woody debris in forests or gardens but specially enjoys pine needles and therefore most commonly found where pine trees are abundant in a moist cool area. It grows alone or in small groups.Psilocybin content in this species has been isolated at 0.45% and as high as 1.93% which compared to Psilocybe azurescens at 1.8%, some strains or families of P. subaeruginosa could be even more potent.
